Hello. My son, age 9, was recently diagnosed with DYT1 dystonia. His symptoms were quite mild initially and he was able to run and play sports. He developed foot drop and had decreased ankle control. He fractured his ankle and was placed in a cast. Since that type, his symptoms have magnified significantly, with increased twisting of his left leg and trunk. I am wondering if this is common, that a traumatic events can result in magnification of symptoms. I am working with him on his drop foot and ankle control (I am a physical therapist) but am having trouble determining if his dystonia, his ankle, or both, are causing his abnormal gait.
